Entire Kerala declared as drought hit

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Government on Wednesday declared the entire state as drought-hit and sought Central assistance to take up relief measures.

The decision was taken at a meeting of State Disaster Management Authority chaired by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

The state decided to submit to the Centre a detailed memorandum seeking financial assistance for taking up relief works, Revenue Minister Adoor Prakash told reporters after the meeting in Thiruvananthapuram.

Ministers were given charge to monitor relief works and asked to convene meetings at assembly constituency levels to assess the situation, he said.

Supply of drinking water at places wherever necessary would be given priority and directions has been issued to officials to take urgent steps in this regard, he said.
