Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh: A fire was blazing this evening in the thick forests near the famous Tirupati temple in Andhra Pradesh.
Thousands of pilgrims visit the shrine to Lord Balaji everyday, which is built on the Tirumala Hills, 600 kms from the state capital of Hyderabad.
A press release from the trust that runs the temple said 400 hectares have been burnt so far, but stressed, "There is no threat to Tirumala and the pilgrims are appealed not to feel panic and they can have their pilgrimage to Tirumala."
Thick smoke enveloped the hills this evening, shops around the temple were shut, and the pathway used by devotees was closed as a precautionary measure, reported news agency IANS.
Air force helicopters will conduct an aerial survey of the forests tomorrow morning.
