Nagapattinam:
Fishermen of over 54 hamlets in Nagapattinam district, who had launched an indefinite fast on December 21 in protest against arrest of their counterparts by Sri Lankan Navy, today called off their protest.
Representatives of fishermen associations announced this decision here following a meeting with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha in Chennai on Monday.
Earlier, a DMK delegation, comprising former Union Minister TR Baalu, Nagapattinam MP AKS Vijayan and former Tamil Nadu Minister U Mathivanan, visited the protesters.
The fishermen had been demanding immediate release of 210 fishermen of Nagapattinam, Karaikal and Pudukottai districts, detained by Lankan Navy over the past few months
