Four Held in Connection with Murder, Beheading of Dalits

Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu: Four persons were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the beheading of two Dalit brothers after they were hacked to death in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu.

"We have arrested four persons and further investigation is on, we are looking into several aspects," Superintendent of Police, Cuddalore District, A Radhika told PTI.

The arrested persons--M Gajendran, M Venkatesan, E Sivamani and P Pattabiraman--are all in their 20s and had allegedly told investigators that they identified the victims to other killers of their larger group which had "hired assassins."

The murder of Dalit brothers, Ambulance Kumar (40) and Rajesh (30) of Annamalai Nagar here in the early hours of yesterday has shocked the locality as the duo were beheaded after they were hacked to death.

The severed heads of the victims were thrown in front of a hospital here. The murders are seen by the police as the handiwork of a rival gang operating in the region.

Meanwhile, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, a Dalit political outfit, has sought a probe by the CBI. They also held a protest demonstration in Chidambaram on Wednesday.

The VCK functionaries said "they would not hesitate to pursue legal steps to get a CBI probe instituted in the case if the state government did not order an investigation by the Central agency."
