Four more victims of Visakhapatnam oil refinery fire die, death toll rises to 18

Visakhapatnam: The death toll in Friday's fire at the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited's refinery complex in Visakhapatnam rose to 18 with four more workers succumbing to their injuries today.

Executive Director of HPCL's refinery VVR Narasimham said that all four victims - M Malakondaiah, Manmadha Reddy, Ramana and YV Satya Rao - were engaged by the private contractors. They were undergoing treatment at Manipal Hospital, Old Care Hospital and New Care Hospital.

Eight others, who had been flown to Mumbai for treatment, were responding well to the treatment, Mr Narasimham said.

A massive fire broke out on Friday evening at the HPCL complex when workers engaged by private contractors were inside. Of the 18 persons killed, only one - Ch Murali, in-charge of the cooling tower - was an HPCL employee.

18 more people are undergoing treatment at various hospitals in the city.
