Chennai: Union Power Ministry on Thursday said due to corridor congestion, further allocation of power to Tamil Nadu was not feasible from the Central Grid.

After reviewing the ongoing power project in Vallur set up by NTPC Tamil Nadu Energy Company limited (NTECL) in Chennai, Union Minister of State for Power K C Venugopal said, "despite surplus power available in the Northern grid due to overloading of inter-regional transmission system, further allocation is not feasible".

NTECL is 50-50 joint venture between NTPC and Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Company (TANGEDCO) to develop and implement and operate Vallur Power Project near Chennai.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had yesterday asked to reallocate to her state over 1700 MW proposed to be surrendered by the Delhi government.

"The Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi has proposed to surrender power from various Central Generating Stations for the period from November 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013 for a quantum of 230 MW round-the-clock (00.00 to 24.00 hrs) and 1491 MW during 00.00 to 06.00 hrs," she said.

Noting that his Ministry was constantly monitoring the speedy implementation of the project, Mr Venugopal said 75 per cent of the power generated from the plant would be supplied to the State meeting to the demands.

The first 500 MW unit of the 3x500 project has been synchronized early this year while, the other two units of the project are expected to come on stream by next year, he said.
