Puducherry: A 35-year old undertrial was killed and five escorting police personnel injured when a gang carried out a country bomb attack on a van in which he was being taken to a prison.

Jagan, accused in an extortion case, was being taken back to Karaikal sub-jail after being produced in a court in Puducherry when the unidentified gang members intercepted the police van and hurled country bombs at Nonankuppam village.

Five police personnel, including a sub-Inspector and an assistant Sub-Inspector, were injured in the attack and admitted to a hospital.

The police team was drowned in the cloud of smoke caused by the explosion of the bombs, police said adding they suspected gang rivalry to be cause of the attack.
