Madurai : A Panchayat has introduced a scheme by which one can get purified drinking water if two one rupee coins are dropped in a coinbox similar to a telephone booth, officials said on Sunday.
The water is being dispensed using a valve system, controlled electronically through a coin box akin to a telephone booth.
The valve linked to a Reverse Osmosis plant, installed by Nagamalai Panchayat, can purify 2,000 litres of water per hour, and has been calibrated to open for 22 seconds when two one rupee coins are inserted. This dispenses 16 litres of pure drinking water.
The panchayat had introduced the scheme recently to prevent the spread of waterborne diseases, officials said.
