Thiruvananthapuram: Artists from the country and abroad will soon be able live and work together at an 'artist village' of global standards in Kannur District.
Kerala Lalithakala Akademi has drawn up an ambitious plan to set up the village, a 10-acre studios-cum-residential complex, at Sreekandapuram.
Artists from the country and across the globe can come, stay and work together at the proposed facility, akademi officials said.
Touted as the first such facility of global standards in the country, the village would have separate studios providing canvasses to granite, wood, metal and clay artists.
Residential complexes, exhibition galleries, library, conference hall and cafeteria would be among the highlights of the proposed artist village, a top akademi official said.
"There are many well-run private artist villages and houses in India. But, many of them are charging huge amount from artists to stay and work there. So, the akademi has thought about a facility providing artists space on nominal rates," Akademi Chairman K A Francis told PTI.
He said the village was expected to woo a large number of artists even from neighbouring countries as such a facility is very rare.
"We are planning to give studios and residential facility for a fixed period according to the time required for completion of the work of the artists. Charges will be very nominal...," Francis said.
The state government has already allotted three-acre land for the project and steps have already been taken to get the rest, Francis, himself an acclaimed painter, said.
A total of Rs 10 crore minimum budget is expected for the project.
"The first phase of the construction is scheduled to begin later this month and expected to be completed in four months. We are planning to launch the work with an initial budget of Rs 75 lakh. The government funding is also expected," he said.
The village would also give exposure to regional artists. "The project is expected to create an art boom in the state," Francis added.
