Salem, Tamil Nadu:
Ten kg of gold valued at Rs three crore was seized from a car in this town in poll-bound Yercaud assembly constituency today during a vehicle check, police said.
The ornaments were found hidden in the boot, they said, adding the three occupants could not produce documents to substantiate their claim that they were in jewellery business.
The seized ornaments were handed over to Returning Officer M Sabathy, they said.
Sabapathy said the three, all from Bangalore, assured him that they would produce all documents tomorrow, to which he told them that these would be scrutinised to ascertain if they had paid income tax.
The gold would then be handed over to the department.
Election authorities have announced that anyone carrying excess of Rs 50,000 in cash in Yercaud, where polling is due on December 4, should have valid documents. Otherwise, the amount would be confiscated for violation of poll code.
