Chennai:
Intending to fill up majority of seats lying vacant in private industrial technical institutes (ITIs) in the state, Tamil Nadu government has said that it would manage admission and fund education for 50 per cent of these seats.
"The government would take steps to fill up the 50 per cent of the seats in private industrial technical institutes. These seats would be filled up through counseling in all districts, like the way it is done in government institutes," Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa told the Assembly.
The fee for these students would be borne by the state government, she said, adding, "the government would pay Rs 10, 000 each for students in institutes in rural areas and Rs 12,000 each for urban areas."
The government runs 62 ITIs, which have over 21, 000 students, whereas the 627 private ITIs in the state have a capacity to train around 60, 000 students.
"These private institutes collect Rs 20000 to Rs 25000 (as fees) for rural areas and Rs 25000 to Rs 30000 in urban areas," she said.
Over 50 per cent seats in these private institutes were lying vacant since many talented students could not pay the fee structure," she added.
Creating skilled labour force was vital towards her goal of Tamil Nadu Vision 2023, she said.
