Chennai:
A 43-year-old teacher of a government school and his wife were arrested for allegedly cheating people to the tune of Rs 69 lakh, after promising them land in many places, police said on Sunday.
A woman from Maduravoyal had alleged in her complaint that her tenant Periya Nayagam and his wife had taken around Rs five lakh on various occasions, promising a 'big share' in their saree business.
When asked for the money, she was told that since the business did not go as well as expected, she would be given land in many places, provided she gave another Rs three lakh, police said.
Since the complainant did not get her share of land, she and others, who had by then given over Rs 69 lakh to the couple, filed a complaint with the police.
