Heavy rain lashes Chennai, other districts; schools and colleges closed

Chennai: A holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts today following heavy rains since midnight due to a low-pressure build up in the coastal Andhra region.

In Vellore, schools will remain closed, however, class XI and XII students will appear for the scheduled quarterly exams in these districts.

"Chennai received 7 cm rain in the Nungambakkam and Airport areas and rain is likely today and tomorrow," an officer in the meteorological Department in Chennai said.

A Lufthansa flight from London to Chennai was diverted to Bangalore following heavy rain this morning.
