Hyderabad:
Heavy rains lashed Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema districts of Andhra Pradesh today under the influence of the North East monsoon, throwing life out of gear.
Kavali in Nellore district received 13 centimetres of rainfall and several other towns and villages in Coastal Andhra experienced over five centimetres of rain, official sources said in Hyderabad today.
Heavy rains led to submergence of low-lying areas and several water bodies were in spate.
Standing cotton, corn and other crops suffered damages at various places in the two regions, reports reaching here said.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy reviewed the situation in the coastal districts with senior officials here and directed them to take all necessary measures to help the affected people, sources said.
According to disaster management officials, the "well marked" low pressure area lies over West Central Bay of Bengal and adjoining South West Bay of Bengal, off the South Coastal Andhra-North Tamil Nadu Coast.
The North East monsoon has been vigorous over Rayalaseema and active over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
In a forecast valid until October 24 morning, the met office said that moderate to heavy rains or thundershowers would occur at most places over Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema as well as many places over the Telangana region.
Heavy rains at a few places with very heavy rain at isolated places would occur in all districts of Coastal Andhra Pradesh, as well as Kadapa and Chittoor in Rayalaseema during the next 48 hours.
Heavy rains would occur at isolated places in the remaining districts of Rayalaseema and in several districts of Telangana, the met office said.
