Houseboats workers' strike enters second day

Kottayam: The strike by a section of houseboat workers in the backwater tourism sector at Kumarakom near Kottayam over wage revision contract entered the second day today.

Workers of CITU affiliated Kerala Houseboat and Resort Workers Union were on strike from yesterday demanding that the wage revision be done every year as against the Houseboat owners Association's decision on a two-year period, association President Pushkaran Attuchira told PTI.

The wage negotiations were settled in the presence of Tourism Minister A P Anilkumar on June 24. The association accepted all demands except the two-year period for renewal.

Mr Attuchira said the workers had been given a salary hike of Rs 2,385 per month, an increase of 55 per cent. "We cannot afford another hike next year", he said.

Talks between the workers and association held in the presence of police officials today failed to reach a conclusion.

Workers affiliated to INTUC and BMS unions are not taking part in the strike.
