Thiruvananthapuram:
In a massive show to highlight the dangers faced by traditional fishermen in the back drop of Enrica Lexie case, thousands of people today lined up along the long coast of Kerala demanding stringent measures to create risk-free fishing conditions off the Indian coasts.
Cutting across political lines, hundreds of fish workers, their family members, political leaders, trade unionists and religious personalities forged hands to create a "human sea" to highlight their demands.
After lining up along the seashore, the participants took a pledge to campaign ceaselessly for fool-proof measures to ensure the safety of the fishing community.
The pledge-taking was followed by public meetings across the state where the speakers highlighted the dangers faced by traditional fishing community.
They cited incidents like gunning down of two fishermen by marines of the Italian ship Enrica Lexie and drowning of six fishermen when a boat was hit by Indian ship Prabhu Daya off Alappuzha coast.
CPI(M) state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan, BJP state president V Muraleedharan,RSP general secretary T J Chandrachoodan and Archbishop M Sooai Packyam were among those participated in the programme in state capital.
In many places, fishing sector workers stayed away from work as part of the campaign with the support of all fishery sector unions.
