Hyderabad:
The Hyderabad police today arrested nine persons from Mumbai for allegedly cheating people in Hyderabad by posing as policemen.
Based on a tip-off that a gang, whose members used to take gold ornaments from women by impersonating as policemen, special police teams were formed to arrest the accused, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detective Department) LKV Ranga Rao told reporters today.
"The accused are notorious for operating across the country besides Hyderabad. Nine members of the Irani gang were arrested from Mumbai following a tip-off from Mumbai Crime branch. Further investigations are on to nab other members," the DCP said.
The gang indulged in as many 53 offences of cheating public in different parts of the city in the past one-and-half year, police said.
The accused have been charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for cheating and impersonation, police added.
Police have also asked the public to be vigilant against such gangs.
