Chennai:
A day after it announced the names of five candidates for June 27 biennial election to the six Rajya Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu, AIADMK replaced one of its candidates on Tuesday.
AIADMK student wing leader in Tuticorin S Saravanaperumal was being replaced by K Thangamuthu, an agricultural wing leader of the party, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and party supremo J Jayalalithaa said in a statement.
"The party took the decision to replace Saravanaperumal on receiving certain inputs," the statement said.
On Monday Ms Jayalalithaa had announced the names of V Maithreyan, KR Arjunan, T Rathinavel and Dr R Lakshmanan besides Saravanaperumal as the party nominees for the biennial polls.
Of the five AIADMK candidates, the ruling party is assured of netting four seats on its own by virtue of its 151 legislators in Tamil Nadu Assembly, whose total strength is 234.
Thirty four first preference votes are required for a candidate to be declared elected.
AIADMK is likely to woo legislators from other parties, including six dissident DMDK members besides smaller allies like MMK and Puthiya Tamizhagam to win the fifth seat.
