Jayalalithaa sanctions over Rs 17 crore for 'smart classrooms'

Chennai: As part of efforts to check dropout of students belonging to backward communities, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today sanctioned a financial grant of Rs 17.06 crore for setting up "smart classrooms" and towards purchase of geographical maps in schools run by the Adidravidar and Tribal Welfare department.

As part of this initiative, 100 higher secondary schools that operate under the department would have smart classroom from this academic year, an official release in Chennai said.

A financial grant of Rs 5.50 crore has been sanctioned to convert 20x20 size classrooms into smart classrooms in 100 higher secondary schools.

Similarly, for purchase of geographical maps depicting India, Tamil Nadu and local districts, Rs 11.56 crore has been sanctioned. These maps would be used in 1,48,247 classrooms of 3,246 government schools, the release added.
