Jayalalithaa Seeks PM's Intervention to Secure Release of Indian Abducted in Afghanistan

Father Alexis Prem Kumar was abducted in Afghanistan on June 2.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi today seeking his intervention in securing the release of an Indian aid worker from Tamil Nadu who was abducted from Herat in Afghanistan on June 2.

"Father Alexis Prem Kumar was on a humanitarian mission working with tribal children in Afghanistan when he was kidnapped," Ms Jayalaithaa wrote in the letter. Asserting that his life may be in danger, she urged the PM to "intervene personally and take up matter at the highest level in Afghanistan." (Kidnapped Indian National's Brother Issues an Appeal)

Father Alexis, 47, was kidnapped by suspected Taliban members. The Afghanistan government has arrested three men in connection with the kidnapping.

The eldest in the family, born at Vaariyan Vayal in the Sivaganga district, Father Alexis, a catholic priest was trained in Kodaikanal and has also worked among Lankan refugees. Presently he's the Country Head of the Jesuit Refugee Services (JRS) - an international NGO working for refugees throughout the world. He had completed three years of service in Afghanistan and was based in the Herat province from where he was kidnapped.

Other leaders from the state including DMK chief M Karunanidhi and MDMK's Vaiko have also sought the PM's intervention in the case.
