Jayalalithaa's foster son's verdict postponed after judge receives mystery 'telegram'

Chennai: A special court in Chennai hearing the heroin possession case against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's disowned foster son Mr V N Sudhakaran has deferred its orders for tomorrow.

Mr Sudhakaran was arrested in 2001 for illegally possessing 88 grams of heroin at his home and office in Chennai. He is currently out on bail.

The judge hearing the case was scheduled to pass orders on Friday, but reports suggest that he received a telegram a little earlier casting aspersions on his neutrality. The judge then reported the matter to the Madras High Court and is waiting for directions on this issue before passing the order.

Mr Sudhakaran is the nephew of Ms Jayalalithaa's close aide Ms Sasikala. The lavish wedding she organised for him in 1995 drew lot of criticism. However she disowned him a year later after her rout in state elections. Mr Sudhakaran was arrested during her second term as chief Minister in 2001.

The Public Prosecutor Mr Thamal Khanna told NDTV "we have proved Mr Sudhakaran's illegal possession of heroin beyond reasonable doubts and we expect tough punishment."

However his defence lawyers say "nothing has been proved, we are hopeful that Mr Sudhakaran and the other three accused would be acquitted."
