Chennai:
DMK chief M Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi today filed her nomination for a second term in the Rajya Sabha. Her current term as MP ends next month.
"I have filed nomination with the confidence that we will win. I've confidence that my leader and brother will take care of it," Ms Kanimozhi said.
Tamil Nadu has 18 Rajya Sabha seats. Six of them are up for grabs in July because the terms of the current members are ending.
Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and her party, the AIADMK, are putting up five candidates, effectively contesting all the vacancies.
The DMK by itself does not have enough state legislators to win a single seat. A candidate needs 34 votes to get elected. The DMK, which has 23 MLAs in 235-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, should ensure support of 11 other legislators to be absolutely sure of a seat in the Rajya Sabha elections on June 27.
Political analysts say Mr Karunanidhi is hoping to ally with the Congress for the elections. In March, his party quit the union government accusing it of not taking a firm enough stand at the UN against Sri Lanka over the alleged war crimes by its armed forces.
The DMK is also trying to win the support of the PKM and DMDK, headed by actor Vijayakanth.
Ms Kanimozhi spent 193 days in jail on charges that she helped her party colleague and former union minister A Raja accept a bribe from a telecom firm.
