Left claims more than 70,000 workers laid the siege.
Thiruvananthapuram:
Kerala Chief Minister Ommen Chandy today ordered an inquiry by a High Court judge into the solar scam in his state, buying temporary respite from massive opposition protests over his alleged links to the cheating scandal.
Amid loud cheers and celebration, Kerala's opposition Left Democratic Front or LDF ended its indefinite siege of the state secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram, but opposition leader VS Achuthanandan said they would not let up on their demand for the Chief Minister's resignation.
Over 70,000 opposition activists had protested for two days at the secretariat, the headquarters of the state government.
Mr Chandy, who had declared an unexpected two-day holiday for the secretariat workers, ruled out his resignation, but agreed to discuss details of the probe with the opposition leaders.
The solar scam - an alleged con job by a pair of entrepreneurs including a woman named Saritha Nair - engulfed the ruling Congress-led United Democratic Front or UDF after records showed that members of Mr Chandy's office were in frequent touch with the couple.
Thousands of photographs showing Saritha Nair sharing the stage with the Chief Minister at a public function last year and whispering into his ear were circulated among the Left protesters.
Mr Chandy has maintained that the picture was from a public meeting that he didn't remember until he crosschecked with local leaders.
Mr Nair and her partner, Biju Radhakrishnan, allegedly swindled several people and companies by claiming links with powerful people including the Chief Minister, and failing to deliver on solar energy panels they had promised. They are in jail along with Teny Jopan, who was the Chief Minister's personal assistant.
Many within the ruling front allege that the Left is are trying to revive its cadre by targeting the Chief Minister and his government.
