Kerala farmers' association move against amending Wetland Act

Kerala farmers' association move against amending Wetland Act
Thiruvananthapuram: The pro-CPI(M) Kerala Karshaka Sanghom (farmers' association) has asked the UDF government to abandon moves that went against the Kerala Conservation of Paddy and Wetland Act, promulgated in 2008.

In a statement in Thiruvananthapuram, Sanghom president E P Jayarajan said the Act, passed during the tenure of previous LDF government, was meant to protect the agriculture sector in the state.

Reclamation of paddy fields was going on for the past one year and the district and regional committees set up for implementing the act were not acting efficiently, the statement said.

The Sanghom also decried the government's recent decision to legalise paddy fields carried out before January 2005. The government should give up the moves that went against the Act of the previous LDF government as the paddy fields and wetlands in the state were shrinking, Jayarajan said in the statement.
