Kerala govt gets a month's time to explain action on encroachments

Kochi: The Kerala High Court has granted a month's time to the state government to explain the action taken to evict encroachers post 1977 from forest lands.

The order was issued by a division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manjula chellur and Justice A M Shafiq on a Public Interest Litigation by 'One Earth, One Life', an NGO complaining of encroachments of forest lands in the state.

Earlier, the government had informed the court that there are nearly 8,000 encroachers in various parts of the state occupying forest land after 1977.

The High Court had directed the government to inform it of the steps to be taken for eviction of encroachers.

When the case came up for hearing yesterday, the government sought more time and informed the court that they were taking steps to evict encroachers and information was being gathered from field staff.

The court then granted one month time to the government to give an explanation.
