Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has decided to launch a weekly lottery to mobilise funds for providing financial support for wedding of girls from poor families.
The scheme, "Mangalya lotteries", was approved by the state cabinet yesterday.
The proceeds from sale of tickets of the draw would be utilised for giving Rs 30,000 for wedding of girls from Below Poverty Line (BPL) families and also for those from Above Poverty Line (APL) families with an annual income not exceeding Rs one lakh, official sources said.
The lottery is linked to the 'Mangalyanidhi' scheme proposed in the state budget last year, which mooted to mop up funds by imposing a cess on the wedding halls.
However, accrual in this method was found inadequate and it prompted the government to come out with the lottery scheme.
The Social Welfare Department will be the nodal agency for implementing the scheme and district level committees chaired by Collectors to select beneficiaries.
