Kerala plans to raise the period of detention under anti-social act

Thiruvananthapuram: With the aim of effectively checking activities of goons and the mafia in the state, Kerala Government today said it plans to increase the detention period from six months to 12 months under the Kerala Anti-social (Prevention) Act (KAPA).

"Necessary amendments will be brought in the Act soon," Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said after a meeting of South Zone police officers at the Police Headquarters.

He said strict instructions had been given to crack down on activities of anti-socials and all types of mafia groups, and pointed out that nearly 800 cases involved in financial fraud had been registered recently in the state.

The cyber-cell would be strengthened to combat the cyber-crime menace and a special meeting to work out modalities in this regard would soon be convened, he added.

To a question on the alleged police-criminal nexus, he said police personnel with criminal links were under close watch and "wrongdoers would not be spared".
