Kerala to sign pact with Centre for Kochi metro

Kochi: A tripartite agreement among Kerala, the Centre and Kochi Metro Rail Limited will be signed soon for developing the long-awaited metro rail for Kerala's commercial hub Kochi.

Disclosing this, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy today said the three parties would hold equal stake in the project.

The proposal was approved by the state cabinet, he told reporters.

Mr Chandy said for the Kochi project the Centre had agreed to relax the existing norm that a city should have a population of at least 30 lakh for developing a metro rail with the Centre's participation.

This was for the first time that such a concession was being given to any state in the country, he added.
