Manipal: The gang-rape of a young medical student in the education hub of Manipal in coastal Karnataka had sent shock waves among the community. The state home minister, KJ George, travelled to Manipal to take stock of the investigation and visit the young woman and assure students that the state government was taking the issue very seriously.
The minister told NDTV that four people had been detained for questioning and that the police have strong leads in the case. Eight teams have been formed under the leadership of top police officers.
The minister said security would be strengthened in Manipal and would include more close circuit TVs around the university town.
The minister said the young woman's condition had improved. Mr George said he would like the case heard in a fast track court.
The young woman, a medical student from Kerala, was allegedly attacked while returning to the place where she stays from a late night study session at the University library - and later gang raped. She was admitted to the Kasturba Hospital in Manipal where she is undergoing treatment.
