New Delhi: Liquor has been banned at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad where a trainee IPS officer drowned in a swimming pool after a party five days ago.
"It is hereby ordered that no liquor will be served in the officers club of SVP National Police Academy. It is also directed that hereafter no liquor will be served in any official function of the Academy," Director of SVPNPA Aruna Bahuguna wrote in an order.
The order was issued a day after Manu Mukt Manav, the IPS trainee, drowned in the swimming pool of the Academy in Hyderabad on August 28 night.
The incident occurred when some trainees, who have qualified for IAS (in the next attempt) organised a get-together in the officers' club for their batch-mates in the Indian Police Service.
On conclusion of the event, Manu Mukt Manav entered the Academy's swimming pool, adjacent to the club, and was attempting to cross over to the other side.
When he was seen struggling he was rescued by some fellow officer trainees and support staff. He was shifted to a hospital immediately where he was declared brought dead.
Academy Director Bahuguna has ordered an internal inquiry into the matter, while police was conducting a separate investigation.
Manav, a resident of Hisar in Haryana, belonged to the 2013 batch of IPS and was allotted Himachal Pradesh cadre.
