Chennai: Nearly 18 months after a young woman committed suicide, her husband and his parents have been found guilty by a 'mahila court' of driving her to the extreme step and sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
Holding the three responsible for the woman's death on February 27, 2010 due to harassment and ill treatment to extract dowry, Judge Meena Sathish said the charges against the accused had been proved by evidence.
The woman had spoken to her mother and brother explaining the situation moments before her death, the Judge said.
Besides the 10-year imprisonment, the judge also imposed a fine of Rs 15,000 each on the convicts.
According to the prosecution case, the woman and her husband were working in software firms in Chennai and had married on August 30, 2009.
Her parents had allegedly already given 20 gold coins and Rs one lakh in cash, the prosecution said, adding, that the woman even had a miscarriage due to the harassment and ill treatment.
Before ending her life, she had spoken to her mother and brother on the phone and narrated her ordeal, the court said.
