Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar's office vandalised in Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu
Chennai:
Congress leader and former Union minister Mani Shankar Aiyar's office was today vandalised at his hometown of Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu which he has represented as an MP in the past.
The attack comes just a day after Mr Aiyar whipped up a storm with his controversial 'tea-seller' jibe at BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
The attackers broke window panes of the Congress leader's office and also damaged the gate.
Police say the miscreants are yet to be identified. Meanwhile, two cops have been posted at Mr Aiyar's office.
The Congress leader's comments on Friday at the party's mega conclave in the national capital mocking Mr Modi's humble beginnings had triggered a bitter war of words between him and the BJP. "There is no way he can be Prime Minister in the 21st century... but if he wants to come and distribute tea here we can make some room for him," the 72-year-old Rajya Sabha MP had said.
"The strength of Indian democracy will be proved when a former tea vendor defeats a Dynasty representative. Let this be the battle of 2014," was the acerbic response of the BJP's Arun Jaitley. (Read)
Mr Aiyar, though, remained defiant and refused to apologise for his remarks.(Watch)
