Manipal: 22-year-old medical student allegedly gang-raped

Manipal: A 22-year-old medical student of the prestigious Manipal University in Karnataka was allegedly gang-raped on Thursday. Reports say the girl is from Kerala.

Minister of State for Human Resource and Development, Shahi Tharoor, tweeted this morning that he has spoken to Karnataka Chief Minister K Siddaramaiah. "Explained2 Karnataka CM that so many Kerala kids are studying in Karnataka& parents are worried about their safety. Urged measures be taken. CM assured me his Home Minister would travel to Manipal to take personal charge of the situation. I urged intensified police patrolling," Mr Tharoor said in his tweets.

The student was allegedly kidnapped in the university campus, near Udupi, late on Thursday night while returning to her room from the library. She was then gang-raped by three people. The girl has suffered a fracture in the legs and injuries on her hands and neck, and is recovering in a hospital.

Hundreds of students today protested against the incident and demanded immediate arrest of the persons responsible for the crime.

The police claimed to have found "some leads" and assured that culprits will be arrested soon. "We have gathered some information from different sources. We have some leads into the kidnap and gang-rape, and we are working on it. We have formed eight teams and are rigorously working on it. We hope to crack the case soon," Udupi Superintendent of Police Boralingaiah told reporters.
