Manipal:
The Manipal University has offered a Rs 3 lakh reward - in addition to the Rs 2 lakh announced by the police - for any information that would lead to the identification of the three suspects in the gang-rape of a student six days ago. A medical test today confirmed a sexual assault on the 22-year-old student.
There have been no arrests in the case so far. Twenty-two people have been questioned by police. On Monday, the police had released a sketch of one of the three suspects based on the description by the student.
The student was gang-raped on Thursday night, and is recovering at a local hospital. Her foot was fractured in the assault and there were injuries on her neck and hands. She is yet to give her statement to the police.
She was on her way home from a late-night study session at the library at her college on Thursday when she was allegedly grabbed by the group of men in an auto-rickshaw. They then drove her to a secluded spot nearby and gang-raped her, the police said, after which the woman was abandoned her in front of her hostel.
The police are hunting for the auto-rickshaw in which the student was forced into. Footage from closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras near the place where she was kidnapped is reportedly unclear. SP Boralingaiah, a senior police official handling the investigation, told NDTV that four teams are verifying the ownership and other details of the town's 10,000 autos.
Manipal, along the Karnataka coast, is home to at least 27 colleges and nearly 21,000 students from across the country.
