Maoist leader operating in south India, arrested in Chennai; his partner escapes

Chennai: The top Maoist leader Vivek alias Kumar, operating mainly in south India, arrested yesterday in Chennai has been remanded to judicial custody and sent to the Madurai prison.

Vivek was arrested from Shenoy Nagar yesterday. However Padma, the woman accompanying him considered to be his live-in partner, escaped. The police have now launched a man-hunt to nab him.

The police are also hoping to find out what his exact assignment in the capital city was.

Vivek was slated to move to Karnataka soon with Padma and sources claim that they have found their tickets to corroborate this.

Police sources also add that Vivek, considered to be drawing a regular salary from the Communist Party of India-Maoist was the 'trainer' of the gang that was caught in a police firing in Uthangarai in Tamil Nadu in 2007. There has been a lookout notice for him since 2007

The police consider his arrest big enough to break the backbone of Maoist operations in south India.
