New Light House to be powered by solar units

Kancheepuram: Fishermen in 15 hamlets in the coastal area between Kalpakkam and Marakkanam would have the benefit of a new Light House powered by solar units, which would be able to light up an area of 20 to 30 nautical miles, from next year.

According to Light House Authority of Tamil Nadu sources, the 30 metre high Light House under construction at Kadappakkam coastal hamlet in Cheyyur Taluk, is expected to be complete by December.

The Ministry of Shipping has allocated Rs two crore towards this project.

According to sources, the Shipping Ministry is implementing several projects aimed at automatic tracking of vessels, the Automatic Identification System is to safeguard the coast, and also to help fishermen who often go astray in the high seas.

Presently there are only the Lighthouses at Mahabalipuram and Puducherry.

The light house would be fitted with lights powered by the Solar Units which would be able to light up an area of 20 to 30 nautical miles, the sources said.
