Object resembling a rocket found at Marina Beach

Chennai: The Marina Beach Police Station witnessed some tense moments this evening after a young man found an object that looked like a rocket, swept ashore near the Light House.

Senior police officers have told NDTV that the object "is rusty, about 10 inches long with a diameter of about two inches."

The Chennai Police immediately called the Bomb Disposal Squad to the spot and took possession of the object.

Ruling out any cause for alarm, an official from the Intelligence wing has told NDTV that "it looks about 10 years old and as it is completely rusted after probably being immersed in sea water for quite some time, it cannot be used now. The projectile like object is usually used by the Army."

Some officials felt it may be the "remnants of a weather device" that was washed ashore.

Beach goers seemed unaware of the development as a media contingent gathered at the far end in front of the marina police station, hoping to have a glimpse of the object.

Experts are in the process of examining the object.
