Chennai:
One person was shot dead in a police encounter in Tirunelvelli district of Tamil Nadu.
According to initial reports, a police inspector, who raided an illegal sand quarry near Nanguneri, opened fire in self-defence and killed an alleged gangster. The gangster has been identified as Vanavamalai.
Earlier in the year, a police encounter in Tamil Nadu had killed five suspected burglars which led to a furore and prompted the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to send a notice to police over encounter deaths.
