Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa today termed the partial rollback of petrol prices by Rs 2 per litre, as an "eyewash" that would not soothe people's anger and demanded a complete rollback.

"Reducing Rs 2 from the earlier hike of Rs 7.50 will not benefit the poor. This small reduction will not soothe people's anger. It will continue to be a burden on poor and middle class," the AIADMK supremo said in a statement.

She said the decision by the Congress-led UPA to reduce the hike by Rs two reminded her of the Tamil proverb, "feeding popcorns to the hungry elephant."

Recalling her earlier criticism, Ms Jayalalithaa said petrol prices were hiked, when people were already burdened by the price rise because of the Centre's "wrong economic policies."

She said her partymen had organised a state-wide protest on May 29 against the petrol price hike.
