Posing as cops, robbers loot Rs 58 lakh in Tamil Nadu

Salem, Tamil Nadu: In a daring highway robbery, four robbers posing as police personnel on Tuesday looted Rs 58 lakh cash from two employees of a Coimbatore-based jeweller near Salem in Tamil Nadu.

The four robbers travelling in a car intercepted the two employees' vehicle near Sankari toll gate, about 30 km from Salem, early Tuesday morning.

Claiming that they were police personnel, the gang of robbers searched the employees' car and took away the cash, police said.

They also took the mobile phones of the two employees, police said.

Jeweller Jabura Jovinth had sent the two employees with the cash to Chennai to buy gold. But due to high gold rate, they did not make the purchase and were returning to Coimbatore when they were looted, police said.

After reaching Sankari, the two employees informed the jeweller, who lodged a police complaint on Tuesday evening, they said.

A search is on to nab the four robbers.
