Power tariff hiked in Karnataka with immediate effect

Bangalore: Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has ordered revision of electricity tariff for all Electricity Supply Companies (ESCOMs) in the state for 2012-13, with the average increase being 13 paise per unit.

The increase varies across different categories of consumers. The revised tariff will come into effect for the electricity consumed from the first meter reading date today.

According to a KERC statement, the 13 paise per unit average increase is against the 73 paise hike sought by the ESCOMs uniformly for all categories of consumers other than irrigation pumpset (IP set) users, Bhagya Jyothi and Kuteer Jyothi beneficiaries.

The lowest tariff increase of 10 paise per unit has been approved for domestic consumers.

Of the 195 lakh consumers in the state, increase of 10 paise per unit in tariff is allowed for 141.52 lakh consumers, including domestic ones in both urban and rural areas and farmers with IP sets of more than 10 horse power.

Increase of 20 paise per unit in tariff has been ordered for about 24 lakh consumers, including industries and commercial installations.

KERC has reduced tariff by 50 paise per unit for low tension (LT) water supply installations in urban and rural areas. Further, the Commission has not increased tariff for high tension HT water supply installations.
