Belgaum, Karnataka: Father of Savita Halappanavar, who died in an Irish hospital after being refused abortion, on Wednesday welcomed Ireland's decision to introduce regulations allowing abortions when the mother's life is at risk.

Speaking to PTI in Belgaum, Andanappa Yalagi welcomed Ireland's decision to repeal the legislation that makes abortion a criminal act.

He also demanded a public inquiry into the death of his daughter and urged the External Affairs Ministry to exert pressure on Ireland to order an impartial probe into it.

The death of 31-year old Savita, a dentist hailing from Karnataka, after she was denied abortion despite miscarrying sparked outrage in the country with political parties terming it as a violation of human rights.
