Coimbatore: Authorities on Saturday started the process of sealing buildings, which have violated construction and safety norms, in the wake of the fire in a commercial complex here that claimed the lives of four women.

Accordingly, 11 buildings, including six in corporation limits and under construction, coming under five zones, were sealed, after a meeting of high-level committee, chaired by the Distict Collector, M Karunaragan, official sources said.

The meeting also decided to seal 201 buildings, which were identified as unsafe and not complying with construction rules.

Fifty five buildings in the city limits had already been served notices some months ago, but building owners failed to take any preventive measures, sources said.

Meanwhile, sealing of 55 buildings under corporation limits would be completed in one week, of which six were sealed this evening, they said.
