Second flood alert issued for East Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh

Rajahmundry: East Godavari district administration today issued the second warning in the wake of flood situation and alarming rise in the water levels of Godavari river at Dowleswaram.

Collector Neetu Kumari Prasad said that all necessary steps have been taken in view of the rising water levels and rescue camps are being set up to tackle any eventuality.

"The second warning issued in the wee hours today still holds as the water level touched 15.80 feet at Dowleswaram at 1530hrs. If the water level rises, we will sound another alert in the night," she said.

The collector said that senior officials were monitoring the situation in the wake of surging water level.

A control room has been set up in Kakinada, she added. The collector said that water level at Bhadrachalam was receding whereas over 15 lakh cusec of water was discharged into the sea from Godavari river this morning, she said in a release.

Special control rooms are set up at Rajahmundry, Kakinada, sub-collector office at Rampachodavaram and at Rajahmundry and Amalpuram offices.

"So far, 1300 people from Lanka village were evacuated to safer places In Rajahmundry town alone whereas 609 people staying in low-lying areas are provided shelter at Chanda Satram and municipal kalynan mandapam," according to the release.

In Rajahmundry division ,720 people at Kotipalli in K.Gangavaram mandal and 43 people at Jonnada in Alamuru mandal were evacuated to safer places.

In Rampachodavaram agency division, the roads leading to Devipatnam were inundated and villagers of Veeravaram Lanka and Cheyyuru were shifted to safer places.

At Dowleswaram bridge, the water level recorded in the evening was at 16 feet and the flow of water was 16.40 lakh cusecs.
