Solar scam case: Oommen Chandy's former personal assistant arrested

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's office is mired in yet another controversy after his former personal assistant was arrested near Kottayam today after a day-long interrogation by the police for his alleged links in the Solar Scam case.

Tenny Jopan was suspended from his post earlier this month, along with a gunman. He will be produced before the court tomorrow.

The alleged scam revolves around Sarita Nair and Biju Radhakrishnan, who are accused of financially cheating people by promising to provide them equipment to tap green sources of energy.

The Opposition had alleged that the Chief Minister's Office had been in close contact with the two accused. They claimed that over 70 calls were made to Ms Nair from the Chief Minister's Office even after her arrest.

The Opposition has also alleged that the Chief Minister's Office attempted to favour the company owned by the two accused in getting government contracts, a charge Mr Chandy has denied.

The Opposition had stalled the Assembly proceedings for over a week demanding Mr Chandy's resignation. The Chief Minister has distanced himself from the allegations and slammed the Opposition for creating a 'smokescreen' to garner political mileage.
