Thrissur: A South African woman was arrested on charges of cheating one person after sending fraud SMS through which she tried to collect USD 8500 from him, police said today.
Mary Habeeba Abaimu, 37, was arrested on Tuesday following a complaint lodged by Nanda Kishore, police said.
Kishore, in his complaint to police, said that the woman had send an SMS informing him that he won a cash prize of Rs 200 crore in a lottery and asked him to pay USD 8500 as service charge in order to get the prize.
When the women arrived at Chalakkudi to collect the amount from Kishore, she was arrested and charges under various sections of IPC, including 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences) and 420 (cheating) besides various sections under Information Technology Act and Indian assport Act, police said.
A magistrate court remanded her to 15 days judicial custody.
