State government may shift Rajahmundry central jail

Rajahmundry: The proposal to shift the Rajahmundry central jail to Jaggampeta is being considered by the state government, Rajahmundry MP Undavalli Arun Kumar told reporters in Rajahmundry on Wednesday.

Shifting the central jail would enable housing to the poor, construction of an agricultural college, Nannaya University buildings and an indoor stadium at Rajahmundry.

Shifting of the jail would be done without affecting archaeological monuments in its jail premises, he said.

The new road bridge on Godavari was likely to be completed by the end of March 2013 and this would help reduce pressure on the road-cum-rail bridge. This would also minimise the length of 36 kms of national highway and save fuel to the extent of Rs 1000 crore, he said.

He said that the rail-cum-road bridge was not meant for national highway capacity and heavily loaded vehicles were the cause of repairs. Instructions were given to both East and West Godavari district officials not to allow heavy vehicles on the bridge, he said.

He also said that five railway overbridges were sanctioned in Rajahmundry parliamentary constituency.
