Hyderabad: In an act of honesty, three students in Hyderabad alerted the police about currency notes found spilled at an ATM and averted a possible theft of amount over Rs 24 lakh from a kiosk, police said today.

The trio, Shiak Latheef Vali, S R Shiva Durga Prasad and J Hariprasad, pursuing degrees and final year of CA course had gone to the SBH ATM at S R Nagar on night of September 19 for withdrawing cash, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Zone) V Satyanarayana said.

Vali along with his two friends entered the kiosk to withdraw an amount of Rs 200. While taking money out from the ATM, his hand touched the door of the ATM machine and it automatically opened, the DCP said, adding, they then found wad of Rs 500 containing Rs 1.5 lakh laid as loose cash beside the cassettes/trays (which contains cash).

"Immediately, the trio informed the police, who rushed to the spot and called the SBH Bank staff and custodian of ATM keys. After counting the total amount, Rs 24,50,500 was found, which was tallied with the amount filled in machine by the custodian of ATM," the senior police officer said.

If the students had not informed the police, the money could have been stolen, the DCP said, adding, the timely action by students averted a possible theft.

Police appreciated the young boys for their honesty and sincerity.
