New Delhi: The Supreme Court today dismissed a petition challenging Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's decision to convert the state's new assembly and secretariat building in Chennai into a government hospital.
The sprawling complex was built by the previous DMK government at an estimated Rs 500 crore and inaugurated by the Prime Minister.
But after coming to power in 2011, Ms Jayalalithaa decided against shifting out of the existing secretariat at Fort St George. It was decided that the new building would house a government hospital.
A petitioner, believed to have been propped by the DMK, had challenged the decision in the Madras High Court, which dismissed it. An appeal was filed in the Supreme Court.
The top court today refused to take up the petition, saying: "It is for the executive, and not the court, to decide where to hold the assembly session."
