Thiruvananthapuram : The Supreme Court said that Kerala is the only state in the country where the state tells its citizens not to obey the law.
The Apex court was hearing the Kerala government's appeal against the Kerala High Court order which stayed a provision that allowed district police chiefs to grant permission to hold public meetings and assemblies on public roads and road margins.
This provision was inserted to negate the High Court judgment which said that processions and demonstrations could be allowed on one side of the road, leaving the other side for traffic and pedestrian movement.
The Supreme Court told the Kerala government counsel, "Is it that your state has a proactive legal department. Be it a Supreme Court order or a High Court order, you are bringing legislation to overcome it."
The Supreme Court was referring to the Mullaperiyar case where Kerala enacted a law to overturn the apex court judgment.
The Supreme Court will take up the case on April 30.
